Saturday 23rd
January 2010. 8.30 – 4.00pm - Vegetable Growing
– Getting started
You
will be introduced to the principle of organic gardening including a tour of
the garden at Upper Grange. We will see how natural methods used in an organic
garden enable us to be well nourished with the crops we grow. Learn how to
develop your own plans for growing vegetables, choosing which crops to grow,
buying seeds and selecting varieties. Find out about preparing the ground for
vegetables, including digging and no-dig methods and raised beds.
Saturday 20th
March. 9.00 – 4.30pm - Springing into Action
Learn how to be successful growing vegetables from
seed. Preparing seed beds for sowing outdoors and
using trays of compost indoors. There will be ‘hands-on’ practical experience
of seed sowing indoors and out. Find out how to look after your seedling
vegetables. Learn how to grow potatoes, salads, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots
and cabbages. You will be introduced to the principles of crop rotation and we
will discuss weeding and mulching.
Saturday 26th June.

In The Swing
Of Summer
Learn techniques to look after vegetable crops through
the year. You will explore the principles of pest and disease control in an
organic garden and learn about companion planting. Also we will be starting to
explore the idea of soil fertility, organic matter and caring for your soil.
We will introduce you to new approaches to organic gardening including
biodynamics and permaculture.
Saturday 25th September
9.00 - 4.30pm

The Fruits of Our Labour
Enjoying autumn bounty in the vegetable garden. We will
learn how to harvest and store crops and how to save your own seed. We will
consider crops to plant next year and begin compost making in practice and
theory. We will revisit soil fertility with the sowing of 'green manures'. We
will review the vegetable growing season, what has been learned and how one
can take the learning forward.
Saturday 9th October
9.00 - 4.30pm
This is an extra day devoted to food processing. Please
see the end of the Cookery Course for more details.

The gardening workshop is run by and experienced
facilitator and will include a range of activities - talks, group discussions,
demonstrations, practical work etc. The sessions are suitable for beginners
and those wanting to develop their skills and knowledge further. As with all
the courses it is advisable to book all four workshops but each one stands
alone if a particular day is of interest. Please wear suitable clothing and
strong shoes, especially in winter/spring.
